Republic XF-12 Rainbow,P-47N Thunderbolt and RC-1 Thunderbolt Amphibian:1 Winner and 2 Losers.

The recent past and posible future of the Republic Aviation Corporation in the late 40’s are represented in this photo.
The brilliant story of the classic Thunderbolt and the failed promises of two technically successful ones:
The innovative Rainbow; too much aircraft for the postwar commercial aviation and too “slow” and equipped with the then “demodé” piston engines to the military.
And the RC-1 Thunderbolt Amphibian, the forebear of the well known RC-3 Seabee. Born with the hope of a commercial light aircraft boom that didn’t happen.
Thankfully for Republic’s future, the company it still retained the magnificent design touch in the single engined military jet aircraft business….
