The Coronado was the faster airliner of its day, sadly it also proved to be the end of the road to Convair’s commercial aspirations. Convair joined too late the jet airliners’ roster with their initial 880; pretty aircraft that turned out to be uncompetitive with the well-established 707 and DC-8. With their Coronado Convair tried to put things right, yet the result was another commercial failure. Marred by poor range, only 37 were produced and the company suffered record losses due to these beauties.
