The 1956 Skylancer was one of those sad cases of the right aircraft at the worst time. A refined F4D Skyray really. By reducing the wing thickness/chord ratio; redesigning canopy and inlets and lengthening of the fuselage of the basic design a subsonic fighter became a Mach 1.44 capable beauty. Tests proved it was a formidable fighter too with serious grow potential. Regrettably for the Douglas people the Vought F8U Crusader was already there.
Cool photo montage of a Skylancer ejection seat system test. Yep, I love this kind of “collages”.
