SAIMAN 202/I: “The Flying Mantovan,” literally.

The 202’s were neat side by side two-seat cabin monoplanes designed by order of the Italian Regia Aeronautica in the second half of the 1930s. Thoroughly orthodox in construction with their fixed tail wheel undercarriage and in-line engines, those SAIMAN were built in considerable numbers for both military and civilian use.

The great race driver Tazio Nuvolari “The Flying Mantovan” owned this one. “Nivola” operated it from the Mantova airport. He is seen seated next to his personal emblem, a gift from the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio.
