Dornier J Wal: “Better late than never”

Roald Amundsen tried to reach the North Pole in 1925 by “Whale”. Amundsen was sponsored -and acompained- by the American millionaire Lincoln Ellsworth, they bought two of the best seaplanes available, Dornier Wals. During the failed attempt one of the Wals (N-24) was lost without lost of lifes while the other (N-25), after it made a safe emergency landing. N-25 was trapped there until an airstrip was built by their crews in the ice pack…..from where all members flew to safety after 3 weeks on the ice.

Painfully descriptive photo taken by expedition member Oscar Omdal.
