McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee: Even better than the real thing.

The Catalonian comic artist Guillermo Sánchez Boix (1917-1960) -better known as “Boixcar”- became famous by his “Hazañas Bélicas” (War Exploits, sort of) comic stories of the 1950’s. Boixcar was one of the best draftsman of warlike comics of his era. He painstakingly reproduced the hardware with the help of photographic documentation. Here it is an obvious case.

Both the WW2 and Korea served as backgrounds for Boixcar’s stories. This magnificent study of the USS Essex “served” in his Korea. The Essex was the first carrier to operate jet fighters – in this case a pair of McDonnell F2H-2 Banshees.
Boixcar’s work means a lot to me; as a kid I devoured all the “Hazañas Bélicas” I laid my hands on. Mind you, I’m not that “vintage”, but his tebeos/comics circulated quite a lot here in Spain and for a long time.
