Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk.IX: A Porter, please !!!

It was a hot summer just after the D-Day landings at Normandy and someone thought that it could have been a good idea to do something with the Tommies’ dry throats. This Mk.IX (MJ329) carries two large beer kegs -the so called “Modification XXX”- on its underwing bomb shackles. First used “operationaly” in D-Day +7 (June 13th), the ground clearance of those barrels when full was found to be too marginal. A less “poetic” solution was soon reached using another Mk.IX that carried the beer in a more appropiate long range fuel tank. It seems that beer had a fuel taste after that…well, sure better than nothing.
