General Motors FM-2 Wildcat: Time capsule.

The Lake Michigan was employed during WW2 by the US Navy as a safe place to undertake the already hazardous carrier pilot training. Two old “paddle” steamers were converted into training carriers for that purpose: the USS Wolverina and the USS Sable. It was while taking off from the later that this FM-2 was lost due to engine malfuntion on Dec 28,1944.

Photo taken almost 68 years later (Dec 7,1912), when this Wildcat was recoverd from its “not ultimate” resting place 200 feet underwater. The Grumman “iron works” sure knew how to design tough aircrafts.
