Bell 47G-2A-1: They gave it wings.

Funny looking experimental “Sioux” first flown in 1963. The so-called “Wing Ding” was equiped with a pair of wings in order to improve the payload capacity – not in hover though. The theory was that such wings outloaded the modified rotor during flight. The quadricycle landing gear was also there for something; rolling take-offs and landings were primordial.
Nice, but the Russians did it much, much better with their huge and operational Mil Mi-6’s.
