Even with it myriad of defects the US Navy was soon seduced by the sheer Beauty of the Cutlass and its “recruiter” potential . A pair of early F7U-1s were used by the Blue Angels aerobatic team circa 1952-53. One of the best performance of the Cutlass with them -of the only 3 undertaken- happened when the hydraulics failed soon after the usual afterbuner. The pilot, “Whitey” Feightner, pulled the manual backup regaining, after 10 seconds of anxiety, enough control to make an emergency landing. The delighted crowd wanted an encore !!!
