Manufactured at Hughes Aircraft factory in Culver City, the colossal H-4 Hercules was conveniently conceived to be built in sections in order to allow its movement. Around 70 years ago, in June 1946, its main sub-assemblies were transported this way to Terminal Island in Long Beach. At a speed of 2 mph the journey took two whole days. After assembly the Spruce Goose took its first flight next year, 1947. All for nothing, well, just because Howard Hughes’ stubbornness.
