McDonnell F-4 Phantom: Goin’ out with a Bang.

How time flies… Once the mainstay of the service, now the USAF days of the “Double Ugly” are numbered. With Tyndall-based 82nd Aerial Target Squadron converting to the QF-16 (based on early model F-16s), the last QF-4s will soon be expended from Holloman AFB. A sad, but useful “Pharewell”.

No need to quote this dramatic action-packing LIFE pic, I guess.

  1. When General Robin Olds was laid to rest here at the Air Force Academy, I noted to my cousin who was stationed there at the time, the Flight of F4s that flew over were not the usual Smoke Poles! He told me, they were German Luftwaffe F4s with smokeless engines. What an irony, to have the Luftwaffe do the final fly over and missing man formation, when Robin had 12 aerial and 11.5 ground kills against the Luftwaffe.
