Gemini IV: Ride ‘Em Space Cowboy.

The Gemini IV prime (Ed H. White & James McDivitt) and back-up (Frank Borman & James A. Lovell) crews trying to be not too serious. A very interesting photo to me for two reasons, hilarity apart. First, they are wearing the early David Clark G3-C with the then classic silver outer layer. Those spacesuits were only employed during training and never saw operational use. Of note also the skids landing gear of the Gemini capsule model, part of the astonishing Gemini Para-Glider recovery concept.

  1. The Gemini space ship was designed with the input of Virgil “Gus” Grissom. The other astronauts said it was like flying a fighter plane! Only one small problem, the engineers built it around Gus, who was only 5’5″ (1.65 meters) tall. The other astronauts dubbed it, “The Gus Mobile!”
