Polikarpov I-16 type 24: You are the one for me, Fatty (V).

The Fundación Infante de Orleans’ Ishak (Donkey) being test flown in New Zealand before its shipment to Spain. Already dressed as a Republican “Mosca” (fly) it still lacks some finishing touches.

Alluring in a definitely rotund way. Such a superb photo of Alex Mitchell, you can almost hear its throaty ASh-62.

    • Its Russian nickname was certainly more descriptive, but the Spanish Republican had a curious origin. When the first I-16’s arrived to Spain in late 1936 they came in huge wooden boxes with the word “Москва” (Moscow) in huge characters…..the Spanish literally read “Москва” as “Mosca” so….
