“El Avión” is a neat restaurant built around a quite dilapidated C-123K Provider (54-0663) in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. Nothing strange here really: people have been using old aircraft in things similar since the very beginning of aviation. What make this case unique is the dark past of the subject. This now peaceful plane is the sister ship of another Provider that was shot down in 1986 over Nicaragua while they were used on the U.S. government-sponsored covert resupply program for the Contras, the notorious Iran-Contra affair. That spilled the beans, ending such “dubious” operation; 54-0663 was simply abandoned in place.
Surely unique the Provider.
