Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina: All-terrain.

A PBY enjoying the very, very shallow -and muddy- waters on Amchitka Island, Alaska on June 23, 1943. Being at war in that inhospitable place you had two main hazards: the enemy and the climate….., not sure which one was the worst.

The PBY was up to the task, as usual.

  1. I have a real soft spot for the forgotten theater of war, since I have several hours as a copilot on the PV-2 Harpoon. Those brave men in their Ventura’s , B-24s and B-25s, flying missions to the Japanese Kuril islands. The first time since the Doolittle raid that Japan was attacked! They kept tens of thousand of Japanese solders pined down that were desperately needed elsewhere in the Pacific.
