The idea of equipping the Italian Regia Aeronautica with a decent heavily-armed long-rang twin-engined fighter started in the mid-1930. However it was only until 1943 when some Italian products with the necessary technical qualities and performance became available. One of them was the, by then almost orthodox, SM.91. A derivative of the company previous SM.88 prototype, the design powered by a pair of powerful DB 605’s made it maiden flight in the Spring of 1943. Just two prototypes were completed before the Italian surrender. Both were captured by the Germans and send to their country were their trace was lost.
An elegant design marred -in my humble opinion- by its somehow bulky central nacelle.

You would think by then, they would have captured at least one P-38, and seen the light on how to place the pilot?
They got one, a little too late.
Very P-38 like design concept, but more speedy perhaps.
Quite slower. It was a heavier two-seater.
