The Ambassador was the answer to one aircraft type specified in the famous Brabazon Committee. That original requirement soon evolved to gave birth to a bigger, more complicated and powerful aircraft. The Ambassador main -an originally only- operator was British European Airways (BEA). This company acquired twenty which were known as the “Elizabethan Class”.
As a piston-engined aircraft in the era of the jet/turbojet, the AS.57 service life was short. They ended their life earning their bread in humbler companies, aiding in the birth of the charter service.
The beautiful lines of the AS.57 are evident in this pic of the prototype (G-AGUA).
