The MBR-2 was Beriev‘s most successful pre-WW2 design, and certainly the most produced USSR seaplane. This short-range maritime recon flying boat had a wooden fuselage and metal wing construction and was powered initially by a 680hp M-17 and later by a 860hp M-34 (MBR-2bis). This sturdy and able aircraft made its maiden flight in 1931 and was manufactured until the German invasion. The more than 1,300 produced did their fair share during the war.
Some Finnish “sotilaat” taking charge of a Soviet Navy ski-equipped MBR-2bis which had crash-landed on a frozen lake (16 Feb. 1943). The pilot and crew were captured and became POWs. The Finns acquired four more by similar means.
