Friedrichshafen FF54 Vierdecker: “If it looks bad it will fly…. “

Experimental German quadruplane -I love that word- built in 1917. Powered by the archetypical 160hp Mercedes D.III, the FF54 was weirdly rigged; highly asymmetrical configuration and with a pair of narrower inner wings. It crashed on its very first flight. After that The FF54 was fitted with a modified vertical stabilizer and rudder. Tested unsuccessfully in 1918, the FF54 became later a triplane (the 3rd plane missing)…. another flop.

You oughta love its elegant “Teutonic” fuselage.
