Heinkel He 111Z “Zwilling”: Twice as Good

This bizarre contraction was developed as a result of a German Ministry of Aviation (Reichsluftfahrtministerium /RLM) proposal for a towplane powerful enough that could safety tow a fully-loaded Me 321 – according to some sources it was Ernst Udet himself who proposed such an aircrafts. The Zwilling (twin) was the result of mating two He 111 bombers though the addition of a new wing center section equipped with a fifth Jumo 211 engine. Only about a dozen were built serving mainly in the Eastern Front and Italian Front. In the later one , ironically, they spend some of their time towing the smaller Go 242 gliders.., in pairs.
Plans to fulfil strategic recon and bomber roles were proposed, but in the end, not realized.
