Westland CL.20: Second Best.

The CL-20 was Westland second try -after the unsuccessful C.29, into the Autogyro business. For this new tentative Edward Petter chose to collaborate with another autogyro designer, in this case the French George Lepère. It was, in essence, Lepère’s previous autogyro design (the direct-control CL-10B) that became the basis fot the CL.20. Looking quite like the C.29 though, the CL.20 started its trials in 1935. Control problems were encountered soon and some modifications were made but in the end this autogyro proved to be a dismal failure; it was only able to reach a height of about 300ft. Only one was built.

Such a pity. It sure was handsome; specially its Pobjoy S Niagara engine’s nose affair
