The Ca.124 idro was a recon-torpedo bomber floatplane design built by the Aeronautica Caproni in 1937. It was a three-seat streamlined monoplane powered by a 700hp Isotta Fraschini 12R and equipped with twin floats, all of mixed construction. The unique prototype performed well in testing, showing good flying characteristics. It met all requirements asked by the military, but in the end they “treacherously” decided twin-engined torpedo bombers were the way to go. The Ca.124 idro faded into oblivion soon after that.
A clean looking aircraft it was, that’s for sure.
Of course, in the end, it was the tri-engine planes that ruled the Mediterranean for the Italians!
…and the sleek RS.14.
