Also known as the Aviavnito-3, the KhAI-3 was a motor-gilder designed by a team led by Alexandr A. Lazerev in the mid-1930s. Intended to carry about 11 passenger while powered by the mere 125hp of its Shvetsov M-11, this flying wing was one the motor-glider transport studied by the Soviet authorities to reduce costs. Of mixed construction, the KhAI-3 was quite unorthodox in configuration as we can see in this stunning artwork. The prototype made its first flight in 1936. After some modifications, it served as a general utility transport for a few years (thanks, John).
Lovely box cover of an Unicraft company model.
The old adage, if it looks right, it will fly right, doesn’t always prove true!
So true.
There’s no indication that it was dangerous.
They worked out some balance, trim, and control issues, and it was tame and stable. Served as a general utility transport for a few years.
Hi.
It seems I somehow got confused and mixed up my info. The KhAI-4, not the -3, was the one which only made 3 hazardous flights before grounded.
Thanks.
