Savoia Marchetti S.55: Infatuations’ side effects.

Stupendous example of quite late (1931) Futurism art by Giacomo Balla. It commemorates the first of Italo Balbo’s famous transatlantic flights, 1930 Orbetello-Rio (Brazil).
Nobody can deny Giacomo Balla’s love to aircraft; he called his daughter: “Elica” (propeller).

  1. 08/15/2008. Remarks by Bernhard Klein: “Between July 1 and August 21, 1933, 24 S.55Xs flying boats made a round-trip flight from Rome, Italy to the Century of Progress World’s Fair in Chicago, Illinois, USA, under the leadership of General Italo Balbo, the Italian Air Minister. The outward journey of 6,065 mls (9,761 km) was accomplished in 48 hr 45 min. The longest (1,500 mls, 2,414 km) leg was between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Cartwright, Labrador, Canada, and the flight ended on Lake Michigan near Burnham Park.

The photo, taken on or directly after August 21, 1933, is showing 18 S.55Xs back at their home base at Orbetello, Italy. Note some of the crews standing on the wings.” Additional photos 1 2 (site files).

  2. As a footnote… they have this on their Website…

Using copies in a website, book, magazine etc.
Here is where we get a little more demanding. It is important to hear from you about your desire to use a copy of an image in a website, book, magazine or other form of publication so we can tell you the details about legally using it. The requirements differ from one image to another. In some cases we can give you the go-ahead to use the image, but in other cases our contributors want to have that right. And we want to tell you what credit and link to use with the image. When we find copies of our images that have not been approved or properly credited it seems to indicate to us that our efforts are not valued. Some of our contributors get a little more upset.
